NDA applications continue to decline in 2006

Between 1996 and 2006 the number of new drug applications (NDAs) approved by the US FDA declined by 10 percent, dropping from 289 to 259. Silico Research's analysis of FDA and USPTO's databases shows that this fall has been accompanied by a reduction in the number of out-licensed drugs. An examination of a random selection of NDAs in 1996 and 2006 shows that the number of out licensed drugs dropped from 59 to 36 in this period, a decline of 30%.

Amgen tries its hand at venture capital

Over the past ten years a number of large biopharmaceutical companies have established venture funds to help small start-up biotechnology companies. The aim of these funds is to find new ideas, products and technology platforms to supplement internal research and development and boost product pipelines. One such fund was set up by Amgen in 2004. Formed as part of Amgen's outreach licensing programme and known as Amgen Ventures, this fund, which has $100 million in available funds, focuses on helping emerging biotechnology companies working in human therapies that match Amgen's areas of interest: oncology, inflammation, hematology, nephrology, metabolic disorders, neuroscience and cardiovascular.
